Colombia – The Cradle of Ayahuasca

When people think of psychedelic tourism and Ayahuasca – Peru often comes to mind. But actually Colombia is the cradle of Ayahuasca.

Let me take you on a brief trip through the history of psychedelic tourism and Ayahuasca in Colombia and tell you how it’s making a powerful comeback today.

The Early Days: Richard Evans Schultes

It all started with Richard Evans Schultes, a pioneering ethnobotanist who traveled to Colombia in the 1940s. Schultes who sometimes is called a father of modern ethnobotany, was one of the first Westerners to document the use of ayahuasca among Indigenous tribes. His groundbreaking work opened the world’s eyes to the spiritual and healing potential of this powerful brew.

He also was among the first Westerners to document the preparation and use of ayahuasca – made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Chagropango DMT schrub. His meticulous documentation of the rituals and ceremonies surrounding ayahuasca provided invaluable insights into its spiritual and medicinal significance.

The McKenna Brothers

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the McKenna brothers, Terence and Dennis, made their way to Colombia. Their journey, famously recounted in Terence McKenna’s book True Hallucinations, was a pivotal moment in the popularization of ayahuasca. The brothers’ adventures in the Amazonian jungles captivated a generation eager for spiritual exploration and personal transformation.

The McKenna brothers are well-known figures in the field of ethnobotany and psychedelics. Their work and achievements span various areas, including the study of psychoactive plants, advocacy for the responsible use of psychedelics, and contributions to the understanding of human consciousness.

The Dark Times: Drug Trafficking and Violence

Unfortunately, the vibrant potential of psychedelic tourism in Colombia faced a severe setback due to the rise of drug trafficking and violence. The country’s image was tarnished, and tourists seeking spiritual journeys turned their eyes to neighboring Peru, where ayahuasca tourism began to flourish. Colombia’s rich traditions and natural beauty were overshadowed by headlines of conflict and danger.

Now even places like Costa Rica are more known for Ayahuasca than Colombia. Even though there is no native tradition for Ayahuasca in Costa Rica and most Ayahuasca served there is actually from Colombia.

The Comeback: Rediscovering Colombia’s Psychedelic Heritage

Today, Colombia is reclaiming its rightful place as a top destination for psychedelic tourism. With the country’s improved safety and stability, more and more people are discovering the unique experiences Colombia has to offer.

When I first came to Colombia I was already curious about Ayahuasca but I did not know that it was a thing here. What made it even more complex is that it is Called Yage most commonly than Ayahuasca. When I discovered that Ayahuasca was available here and I did not need to travel to Peru I was really happy. That led me to one day found Ayahuasca in Colombia, to try and bring Ayahuasca tourism back to its roots.
