Sam Believ from LaWayra retreat here. One of the most talked-about aspects of the Ayahuasca journey is the purge. I remember when I first looked into Ayahuasca this was one of the things that scared me the most, puking. I was trying to find ways to avoid it. If only I knew.
It’s a deeply cathartic and transformative part of the experience, but why does it happen? Let’s shed some light on this mysterious process.
- Physical Detoxification: At its core, Ayahuasca is a combination of two primary plants – the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the Chagro leaf. These powerful botanicals initiate a detoxifying process in the body, helping to rid it of physical toxins. Purging whether in form of puking or diarrhea is the way for your body to release toxins.
- Emotional Release: The purge isn’t just physical. Ayahuasca ceremonies often touch on deep-seated emotions, traumas, and memories. The act of purging can be symbolic, releasing emotional and energetic baggage. It is hard to explain unless you never felt it before, but you can feel an emotion leaving you in the physical form of vomit.
- Clearing Blocked Energies: Some indigenous traditions believe that illnesses and discomfort arise from blocked energies. The Ayahuasca purge can be seen as a way to clear these blockages, restoring balance. Taita (Shaman) will also help a lot in removing energies with his cleanses.
It’s important to note that while many experience the purge, not everyone does, and that’s okay. Every Ayahuasca journey is unique. Whether you purge or not, the primary goal is healing, understanding, and growth.
Don’t be afraid of puking, you might find overtime that by ceremony 3 you are looking forward to puke to get the release it can offer. As funny as it sounds you also get better at puking 🙂 You bucket will be your best friend during the retreat, we even had people tattoo buckets on their skin to celebrate that.
